The format varies depending on who shows up, and the energy in the room.
In general, there is a short reading or video clip to watch. It may or may not be sent to participants in advance.
The meaning of words is discussed. The facilitator may provide background information or flesh out the cultural context.
The discussion itself is a combination of structure and free flow. Participants will learn language and strategies to increase group skills e.g. how to interject, how to clarify, how to disagree, how to support an assertion. The facilitator guides the process, collects notes and transcribes highlights of the discussion and may give private feedback on language mistakes, if participants want feedback.
Participants who want to take on more active roles like note-keeper or moderator can do so, and the facilitator works with participants before, during and after the salon to build the necessary confidence and skills.
